I woke up today with a pretty void thinking bucket, which got filled up in a minute or two. Katheryn Bigelow becomes the first woman to win the Oscar award in the category of the Best Director. Celebrations! The entire world went abuzz as the lady director of the movie The Hurt Locker bagged the prestigious award on such an ‘auspicious’ day. The International Women’s Day. James Cameron, director of the much competitive Avatar, and Bigelow’s ex-husband failed to win the same award and was booed by the same big world. Cameron’s loss and Bigelow’s gain is being marked as a God sent omen. A mere yearly win at the Oscars has taken the sexist shape at the world front and as a consequence the gender difference again comes into being. The parasite that is.
Right from the Kodak Theatre in the Hollywood Boulevard, now let’s migrate to the Rajya Sabha, that is the Upper House of India in Delhi. The day was graduating in peace until the debate at the Rajya Sabha for the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill happened to start. Adjournment of the Rajya Sabha took place infinity times. The vice president looked lost and in trauma. There was massive turbulence in and outside the upper house. Lalu Prasad Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav both were at their barbaric best. Brinda Karat and Sushma Swaraj, trying to look like a Christmas tree on Women’s Day, were making ‘considerable efforts’ of showing their support to the bill passage. In short, hooliganism was at its’ peak. Nehru needs to redefine civilization, or else, start writing, “Letter from a man, who is now a Phantom, to the contemporary MPs.”
Now the bigger picture we are served, preaches about the empowerment of women, worldwide. What empowerment are we talking about? This quota is nothing but a discrimination amidst the already discriminated society, the much worshipped women reside in. The elite class and the wives of the jail serving goons will be the dominating majority in the sectioned quota of women in the Parliament. Amongst the already prevailing monkey fights, next we will see cat-fights of the merit-less fairer sex.
Are worth and skill gender biased? Is being a woman enough to “represent” women? Bigelow wins and the entire world screams Symbology. Women’s bill will come into shape and India will sing hail to the UPA government. Gender division counts so much? At the end of the day we are just a species named Homosapiens. Isn’t it?
